Part II: FTP and Uploading Files
Once you have requested and received your user ID
and password from RINET, you may use the built-in upload feature of your
HTML editor or a stand-alone FTP client to transfer your Web files to
RINET's Web server. Please refer to the FTP software's help system for
general use. The RINET server settings shown in this document should be
generally applicable to most FTP clients.
A number of free FTP clients are available for various platforms. A web
search for a free FTP download will give you many options.
You can download FileZilla
for Windows Users or FETCH for
Mac Users. You can also connect to the University
of Rhode Island ftp server to download other FTP clients.
Step 1: Setting up the connection
Download and install the FTP client, or open a transfer session in your
HTML editor. You will need the following information to set up a profile
for your web account. A profile just remembers all the pertinent information
about your login name, password, and what computer you are connecting
to.
Host Name: www.ri.net or www.muni.ri.net
Host Type: Be sure that Automatic Detect is selected
User ID: Type in your Web account username provided to you by RINET.
Password: Type in your Web account password provided to you by
RINET.
It will show up as *****.
- Be sure to uncheck "Anonymous" if given that option.
- Choose "Passive Transfer" or "Passive FTP" if given that option.
- Check "Save Pwd" if you wish. This will save you from having to type
in your password every time.
Step 2: Putting your files on the server
Refer to your client or editor's documentation or help system for specific
information on how to use the application.
- The concept is to send all the Web files from your computer to the
Web server.
- Ideally, the 2 panes of your FTP client's should mirror each other.
Remember, the world can only see the files which exist on the web server.
- Your Web address will be in the format: http://www.ri.net/username
